Finn Slough

Finn Slough is a small community founded by Finnish fishermen in the 1890's. For over one hundred years, this community has suffered extensively from social marginalization for a number of reasons including, but not limited to: their language, Finland's close association with Russia, lack of requirement to pay property taxes, and strong socialist leanings which lends itself to tight communities. Despite attempts to learn English in an effort to assimilate itself into the rest of the community, little progress was made in part to its tax exempt status which has caused some to question th community's legitimacy.

This community now faces an uncertain future as they become more and more vulnerable to encroaching development. The title of the land was purchased in 1989 for the puprose of developing a multi-million dollar housing project. Efforts to evict the members of Finn Slough from their homes are based in part to complaints that the buildings are not up to code despite its quaint charm. Yet even though they are under constant threat of eviction, support has steadily grown in an effort to raise public awareness and have itself designated as a heritage site and thus protected. To date, they are still struggling to preserve their home and way of living.
