J and S on their wedding day. The shadows obscuring them represents the fact that they have not come out to everyone, but their embrace makes their love for one another undeniable.

The Everything

On the importance of travel.

I drove to California on my first road trip. There, as far south as one can reasonably go, wedged between Joshua Tree and the Mexican Border, I realized that nothing is real unless it is shared. That was when I truly photographed for the first time, for by sharing what I have seen, I have made it even more real.

I need to travel – to hurtle myself on the road or through the air from one part of the earth to another at speeds that could tear our bodies apart. All to see sights that could threaten to explode our tiny minds we can barely contain it all. How small our problems at home seem when compared to a world in bloom.

Yet at our fastest, we only do so on a scale that see the rise and fall of entire civilizations, like breaths in winter, before we even approach the nearest point of light in the night sky on which we pin our wishes.

No amount of loneliness, no heart could be so broken, as to not be filled with joy at the possibilities of the everything else waiting for us out there.
